Bites & Insights: Centering and Operationalizing Equity

Thanks to all those who joined for our first-ever quarterly Consultant Lunch and Learn series. CVNC board member Candace Moore, Esq. delivered a powerful workshop that provided tangible strategies for embedding justice-oriented practices into consulting work.

Here are a few takeaways to be more intentional about centering equity in your work:

Equity is both an OUTCOME and a PROCESS that results in fair and just access to opportunity and resources that provide everyone the ability to thrive.

In processes, prioritize access and inclusion to those who need it most, build solutions with people impacted (not just for them), and methodically evaluate benefits and burdens of decisions because the status quo is inequitable. Some tools and strategies that can be helpful in creating more equitable processes include community agreements, collaborative governance models, Spectrum of Community Engagement, restorative practices and consensus-based decision making.

Working to advance equitable outcomes requires us to understand the historical and present inequalities that are embedded in society and design strategies that aim to produce more fair and just opportunities. Some tools and strategies that can be helpful include racial equity impact assessments, disaggregated data, equitable/anti-racist design processes, Anti-racist Results-Based Accountability, and Targeted Universalism frameworks.
